Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale was a chilling look at a dystopian baby-factory future for women in a white, "civilized" country. As if to reinforce the author's message, the American Supreme Court abandoned precedent and opened the door for the states to pass oppressive legislation; this took place rapidly.

I actually had to stop watching the series because it terrified me that it was way too easy to make the book a reality here๐Ÿ˜•

Ms. Atwood has said that all the events that happened in her novel had already happened somewhere in the world. It is disturbing that this is happening in a country that says it values freedom so highly.

I recall her saying that. I just didn't realize how easy it would be to make it a reality here. First step, cut women off from their bank accounts. Women only gained the ability to get a credit card on their own 50 years ago. So that's probably going to be the route the fascists will take.

I am a man and frankly, it is embarrassing to me that so-called freedom-loving men are doing this. I live in Canada, where the law against abortion was thrown out by the Canadian Supremes in 1988 because it violated a woman's constitutional right to "security of the person." My fingers are crossed that women will rise up in anger and vote in high numbers this November as they did in the 2022 Midterms.
